Meet Hiro, our Auckland-based Intern

Hiro is currently completing a paid internship with Frequency, gaining first-hand experience in project management. During his time with us, he’s been learning the ins and outs of project delivery, from understanding timelines and frameworks to collaborating with consultants and clients.

We caught up with Hiro to hear about his experiences so far and what he’s enjoying most about his time with us.

What are you studying?

I’m going into my fourth year of a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours.

Why did you apply for the paid internship with Frequency and what were you hoping to gain?

I came to Frequency hoping to learn what consultants actually do. I don’t think many people fully understand it, and I certainly didn’t when I started, so I joined to see what it was all about and whether it could be something I would want to do in the future.

What  have you learnt during your time at Frequency, and any new skills, techniques, or knowledge?

In the short time I’ve been at Frequency, I’ve learned so much. From the insanely large number of acronyms PMs use on a day-to-day basis, to the overall framework of a project, it’s been fascinating to see everything that goes into making a project run smoothly. I’ve learned about project timelines, what needs to be done, who’s responsible for what, and how tasks actually get completed.

Has there been any surprises during your experience?

I was surprised by how social project management is. I figured I’d be spending all day behind a computer in a corner, but in reality, I’m out talking to other consultants, clients, and anyone else involved in a project.

Would you recommend this internship to other students? Why or why not?

I would definitely recommend this internship to others.  I’ve never worked anywhere with such an inviting and social work culture. Frequency is an awesome place to work and meet new people. The team is so friendly, making it fun to come to work every day.

How has this internship helped you for your future studies and career?

This internship has opened my eyes to the life of a project manager. Three months ago, I didn’t understand what a project manager did, but now I know exactly what their role entails. This experience has sparked my interest in project management and pointed me toward a future career path I’m excited about.

What is your advice for future Frequency interns?

My advice for future interns is not to stress out. When I started, I knew nothing, and no one expects you to. The key is to have a willingness to learn, pay attention, and you’ll grow to love it.
