Blessing Marks Opening of Pukekohe Station Bus Driver Facility

Last month, Frequency was pleased to attend the blessing led by Paora Puru of Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua, marking the completion of the new bus driver rest facility at Pukekohe Bus Station.

Delivered alongside the recent rail station upgrade, the facility extends the cultural and design narratives of the wider transport hub into a compact, highly functional building. The reuse of culturally designed glass, a bespoke building wrap by local artists Michael Tupaea and Holly Mafaufau, and a glulam timber portal all contribute to a space that sits comfortably within the station environment.

The delivery of this project was a genuinely collaborative effort. Frequency supported the project as Project Manager through concept and detailed design, procurement, and construction, and as Engineer’s Representative during delivery. Fabricated off-site as a portable structure, the building enabled an efficient programme while maintaining a high level of design quality.

Most importantly, the facility provides bus drivers with a dedicated space to rest and reset, recognising the essential role they play in keeping Tāmaki Makaurau moving.

A big mihi to our Frequency team, John Edward and Nico Austen for their leadership and care, and to Auckland Transport, Wingates Architects, Libbet Limited, and Castle Portable Buildings in delivering a thoughtful and well-considered outcome.
